Why has the state asked my mother to locate heir's to her brother's estate?
Full Question:
My mother lives in California. Her brother recently passed away. The state is now involved in settling his affairs; however, they want my mother to locate possible heirs to what remains of my uncle's estate. Is that not THEIR job? Also, why are they seeking out nieces and nephews? Shouldn't his remaining assets go to immediate family only (i.e., surviving brothers & sisters)?

Answer:
While the more remote descendants may not stand in line to inherit, it may be routine procedure for the state to try to determine all living relatives to ensure there are no claims for unpaid debts, etc. The state may assume that a spouse has knowledge of relatives that may not appear in their resources.
