Privately owned mailboxes are deemed to be "authorized depositories of mail matter," in view of a duly authorized postal regulation that any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail matter is thereby designated as a letter box for the receipt or delivery of mail matter. It is illegal for anyone other than a postal employee and the owner to access a mail receptacle such as a private mailbox.
