A “Covell” agreement provides for privilege communication between the taxpayer and the tax auditor. Privileged communications are protected from disclosure in court actions. With this agreement in place, the taxpayer may work with the attorney and tax practitioner to resolve the tax problems while minimizing the consequences and threat of prosecution for the taxpayer.
