i would like to know what the possible penalty could be for a first time offense, no previous crimal record for a shoplifting charge, and if an attorney should be retained for this charge. All merchandise was returned however the amount of merchandise returned was in excess if 200.00. A civil pentalty to the merchant has been paid. The defendants would be 2 adults 35 and 55 years of age. No arrest was made but a summons to appear was presented.
