Can I terminate my lease if a pedofile resides in the apartment complex and I have children?
Full Question:
I live in an apartment which I feel my children are no longer safe. I am not 100% positive but I am relatively sure that a man residing in the building is a pedophile. He has been caught with a twelve year old in his garage (talking about how he would have sex with her). I have talked to the office about it with no response. Where do I go, and what do I do from here?

Answer:
As a practical matter, the office or owner should allow you to terminate the lease and leave. This is especially true since you have put them on notice of a potential issue like you mention. I would write to them and ask that you be allowed to terminate the lease without being liable for additional rent after you move and state the facts supporting your request. If they do not agree, a letter from an attorney could make them act as you request.
