Is It Possible to be Divorced and Not Know It?
Full Question:
Is it possible that a person does not even know that the other spouse has already divorced you and you not even know it? This would eliminate any division of properties that the person that knew and purchased properties would not have to divide the profits, because when the actual divorce happens only one person knows that they really are not married and documents that show they are divorced are put together by the person that knows they are divorced. Confusing, but actually happened to me. I lost a ton.

Answer:
Typically, a divorce petition must be served on the other spouse so that there is notice and an opportunity to file an answer and be heard. When proper service of divorce papers isn't possible it is possible to get alternative or substituted service, such as service by publication, which usually involves publishing notice in a local newspaper for a specified time period. I suggest calling the clerk of courts, as rules for substitute service vary by court. Many courts allow a party to get a default divorce decree when the other party fails to answer or appear.
