If a husband and wife are separated (not legally - just living apart), can one of the spouses legally designate someone else to be their beneficiary for their life insurance?

Answer:
The terms of a life insurance contract govern the type of beneficiary (ies) and whether or not they can be changed. If beneficiary designation is revocable, then the policy owner reserves the right to change the beneficiary(ies) at any time and for any reason without his/her/their consent. If beneficiary designation is irrevocable, then the policy owner is usually required to obtain the consent of the named beneficiary(ies) in order to make a change.
