How can I find out if my father left me any property when he died?
Full Question:
My father that I have not seen since I was four passed away. I am told he had properties but I do not know for sure. How do I find out if he had any properties without getting an attorney. I do not want to pay for an attorney if there is nothing to inherit.

You may be able to contact the local probate court in the county where your father permanently resided at the time of his death. In most cases, if your father had a will, a person named in it or appointed by the court (executor) would have filed a petition in the probate court and notified all persons who were entitled to receive property under the will. This person would be called an administrator if your father died without a will, and his property would have been distributed to his heirs according to the applicable state laws of intestate succession. You should have been notified in the event he did not have a will if you were eligible to receive property.
