What does it mean if a judge suspends jail time?
Full Question:
I recently went to court for failure to pay city taxes. I faced 6 months jail and $1000. fine. The taxes had been paid in full, but late. All charges were suspended except $250.00. What does the suspended jail time mean? Do I now have a criminal record? Is this something I need to tell future employers?

Answer:
If your jail time or fine is suspended, you may be placed on probation. If you comply with the conditions of probation, you will not have to serve the suspended jail sentence or pay the amount of the fine which has been suspended. If you fail to comply with the terms of probation, you may be found to have violated your probation and the jail time originally ordered may be re-imposed. Whether you have a criminal record depends on whether you were found guilty of a criminal charge.
