Can Grandparents Inherit Property of a Grandchild?
Full Question:
Our granddaughter came to us at the request of her adoptive parents, after losing a baby,in 2001. After 3 1/2 weeks, she committed suicide.Medicine, forms and many sad and depressed poems were found by the invesigators. We were unaware of any of this. We feel strongly that the poetry could be a fantastic preventative for other teens undergoing the same challenges. The adoptive parents do not agree. We have the poetry and whatever was left of her possessions. Now, after 10 years and because of our desire to honor her by publishing her poetry, they are saying that we must send all of her things to them, they are the rightful owners? What is correct? What will determine, who is the rightful owner to decide to publish or not. The poetry does not demine the parents or living conditions, but just deals with her loneliness and sense of not being loved.

Answer:
The answer will depend on whether she was a minor and if she left a will. If she was a minor, her parents would inherit her personal possessions. If she left a will, the poems will be inherited by those stated to inherit presonal property in her will. If she was an adult and died without a will, the parents would inherit her belongings ahead of her grandparents.
