Full Question:
I am an Illinois resident. Yesterday, I celebrated my 16th birthday. I have been bogged down by parental pressure all my life and have always been forced to live according to their will. Now that I have turned 16, can I live away from my parents and enter into legal contracts?

Answer:
Per 750 ILCS 30/5, an emancipated minor is permitted to enter into valid contracts. It reads:
“(a) A mature minor ordered emancipated under this Act shall have the right to enter into valid legal contracts, and shall have such other rights and responsibilities as the court may order that are not inconsistent with the specific age requirements of the State or federal constitution or any State or federal law.

In the present case, you can file a petition for emancipation in the court. The court may verify your petition and allow it if you can demonstrate that you have the ability and capacity to manage your own affairs and to live wholly or partially independent of your parents. After emancipation, you can enter into valid contracts.
