What Can I Due About a Verbal Loan that Was Not Paid?

i have loaned a large amount of money to a close friend. Unfortunately, no IOU was signed at that point. ( i know foolishness on my part). However i would like to know if there is any hope of getting back the money? And what can i do to obtain it back.
